It is a complex subject, but another one where our media fails us in pretty dramatic fashion. If anyone here is interested in educating themselves on the subject, I'd recommend reading Thomas Friedman's From Beirut to Jerusalem as a great primer. Friedman is Jewish, but does not pull punches and acknowledges many of the mistakes Israel has made.

For me, what I find most persuasive after having read a bit and travelled in the region, is one simple and stark comparison. Israel holds and has held, the power for many decades now. We know what they've done with it. Now imagine what would immediately happen if the power were in the hands of Hamas, Fatah or any of the other Palestinian factions. You actually don't need to imagine it, because Hamas and their competitors for Palestinian support tell you--they want Jews out or dead, or for many preferably both. Think what you like about Israeli policies--and some are hard to stomach--but you cannot deny their situation is rather unique--a tiny nation surrounded by enemies. In their place, what laws would you be willing to put up with in order to safeguard your existence?

While I'm on the subject, I may as well put the match to the gasoline by observing the difference in approach and results between the Trump and Biden administrations. If you think the current situation has nothing to do with American politics, they you simply don't have the faintest grasp of what's happening. With fatigue, I have to repeat that I'm not a Trump fan and don't wish to see him President again, but he was so clearly, SO much better on this issue than the Dems.
