Hello folks,

I am not on here to review, but I did want to help you guys out with a glaring stock opportunity. XOM (Exxon) is trading at $37 these days. During non-covid times, this stock is a $65 to $70 stock. What makes it so attractive right now is the dividend is 9%.

Buy XOM soon, get the 9% dividend and sit on it for for a couple of years while Covid restrictions slowly get eased and demand for oil goes back up to normal levels.
Easy, easy money.

Yes, there is heavy volume on the downside and that is bad short-term, but once everything goes back to normal, XOM will climb at least 50% and you will be getting a huge, mother-fucking divdend while you wait.

I know the double tax implications of owing U.S. stocks is a hit to many Canadian investors, but even with paying tax to the U.S. authorities and then to the Canadian authorities hurts bad, that 9% is fat enough to still make it worthwhile.

XOM Dividend $’s have increased while the price has dropped due to drop in global oil prices. Pre-Covid WTI oil prices were around $60/barrel and $40/barrel now. The dividend yield has increased to 9.2%.

If stock prices go up again that yield % will drop if the $’s remain flat. But the you could sell the stock for a capital gain. Need to keep an eye on the US elections as well. If Biden wins, then he will most likely quickly claw back the corporate income tax reduction Trump put into place as the US will need to find funding for the huge deficits due to COVID-19 without hitting lower income families. That dividend could take a hit and stock prices fall again. Hence, this might be a quick timing play and not a long play.

Best to talk the idea through with your financial advisor first keeping in mind your risk tolerance and current cash needs.

This type of plan really goes off the rails when the company decides to either reduce or suspend the dividend altogether.

For Canadian listed Oil & Gas companies, see what Vermilion, Crescent Point, TORC and Whitecap did with their dividends.
Best to wait until after Exxon cuts or suspends it'd dividend. That creates a lot of selling pressure, and then you can make up your mind what you might want to do with regard to Exxon stock.

Anyways, be careful being sucked in by XOM's dividend as it's not even covered by their cashflow (see link below, but it's only good for another week or so).

Much safer to take a 1 or 2% hit on the dividend and go with safer companies like ENB, PPL, MFC or take a chance with smaller companies like CHE or EIF.

Btw, your apple is soaring...might be time to take some profits.

Actually you are right. We are all in spending here why not get some tips to make extra money. If 9% dividend is true. It much higher than (nearly 5 of banks interest for our saving account). Good tip. I am tempted to buy. It makes sense oil finally will go up for sure.

You still make the same dividend amount, it is just expressed as a different percentage.

If a stock is paying $3.40 in dividends per year, as an example, and you buy in now, you get the stock price appreciation and the same $3.40 dividend on your original $37 stock price purchase.

You sound upset that the stock price would go up and your dividend percentage would go down.

But that percentage only drops to new buyers of the stock that buy in after you did. You still get the 9% on the amount you invested when you bought the stock.

If you guys hate making money, then yes, ignore my stock tip.

XOM might dip for the next 30 - 60 days because the volume is signaling such a trajectory, but 12 months from now, I cant see you losing on the price and with a 9% payout, it is a super fat dividend right now.

The U.S. makes you pay 25% approximately on that dividend, but that still leaves you with the equivalent Canadian level payout of 6.75%, which is historically very good.

Here's a stock tip for you guys. Buy low and sell high. Everybody knows the price is low because of the pandemic. You can see it on almost street corner that gasoline is under a buck a litre. Of course now is a good time to buy because it will eventually go back to where it was before the pandemic.

I was merely stating some key points for those who aren’t investment savvy. I did say the $ dividend was going up and the % grew due to the stock price drop. I also said if the stock price rises the % will drop but you could then sell the stock for a capital gain. I then said that if Biden wins the election and increases the corporate income tax it could affect both stock prices and dividends. That is an additional risk factor.

I then said that people should talk to their financial advisor (someone licensed to give investment advice) to see if this is a good idea for them given their own Individual situation since everyone’s resources and risk tolerance is different and advice that may be good for somebody is not good for everybody.

You said the dividend wont be 9% if the price of the stock goes up. Yes, if you dont buy soon and wait until the price escalates, then what you said is true. But pointing that out doesnt have any value. You could say the same thing for any stock on the planet. If you wait to buy and it goes up, your benefit is reduced.

If you buy at 9% dividend, you will always have at least a 9% dividend. And if the price goes up, then you get 9% plus the gain on the stock price, which is even better.

Your analysis provided nothing but negative energy and you didnt say anything of value. Like a woman, you simply were disagreeable for the sake of being disagreeable.

A financial advisor is a sales person for a particular company and that company's funds. They usually work for a bank or similar establishment like Edward Jones etc.

They will invest you in over 400 companies and charge you 2 - 3% to do it. They will tell you to diversify into 5 - 8 funds that each hold 40, 50, 60 or more companies.

You are then invested in the entire market but are actually being tricked into thinking you are benefiting from 'expert' advice.

That's of little benefit to 98% of the public.

I wasn’t providing any analysis at all just points of clarity to those who aren’t investment savvy just like I said in my last post. I’m not licensed to provide any financial advice so I didn’t. But I do know the process, various risks and have my own investments.

You are making an assumption that everyone here has spare cash to invest and you are positioning it as there is no risk to the investor, just a guaranteed 9% return. It’s not negative energy to tell someone who isn’t investment savvy to talk to someone with a license that is more in the know then they are before putting any cash on the line. The principle is the same when buying a used car off of some no name dealer. I’m telling them to take the car to their mechanic so he can look under the hood before the guy buys the car.

They may be sales people buy they are licensed and do need to follow the KYC (know your client rules) where they can’t recommend investments outside of someone's risk tolerance zone. If someone takes little risk (likes bonds and money market investments) or have little excess cash or uncertain cash flows then this might not be a good recommendation. If someone has $10,000 in credit card debt paying 18-20% interest, it’s a better investment to pay off the credit card than it is to chase a 9% dividend. Everyone is different so your recommendation may be good for some but not for others. That’s all I was saying.
