Hello masseurs

I will (hopefully) be qualifying in Holistic Massage (ITEC) in March.
As a student I have had membership with the CThA, but am considering switching to the Federation of Holistic Therapists, as their insurance is slightly different.

What PAs are you a member of, and do any have massive advantages over the others? Do you all end up joining a specialist association once you've done Aromatherapy or Reflexology, rather than a multidisciplinary one? My tutor certainly has.
Any advice gratefully received.

Like you I joined the CThA when I was a student and stayed with them since qualifying. I use their insurance because it's a good price, but it may not be flexible enough as my business expands.

I'm now also a member of the CNHC.

i,m a member of UKOMpp which is specific to my trade, also CTHa as it is recognised throughout the therapy trades.
i would suggest CNHC as they seem to be leading the way in conjunction with the gov and DOH.

Things are changing alot in the massage world and CNHC should be a good bet.

CNHC is actually not a Professional Association, it's one of the regulators for complementary therapy. (There are three actually at mo. CNHC, GRCCT and BCTC).
Choosing a PA is really not so much about the insurance - you can have insurance from any of those companies without belonging to the attached PA - depending on where you find best value. Just ring them up and ask and there are loads more companies offering insurance.
A PA is more to do with the kind of information and support you get from them. The reason why so many people end up joining specialist associations is that they are kept more up to date with what is relevant to them. Having been a member of a multi-disciplinary PA, I can't say that I got much that was relevant to me from them. If in Essex and London you need to join somewhere that is recognised by local authority.

The CNHC is the only regulator recognised by the Government and the members of PAs who sit at the GCMT are eligible to join CNHC, I recommend you look towards
GCMT for advice. I know personally both the leaders of FHT and CThA and both would provide you with the relevant information you need in this industry, The FHT have a quarterly member magazine which I find high quality and informative

Thanks everyone!

I am in London/Kent, so I'd better check which ones the Local Authority approve, although FHT are so well known I bet there won't be a problem.
Good to know you rate the FHT, Biggaz - I asked them about their insurance separately from enquiring about the PA, and I got an email saying I would need to be a member to use their insurance. Must admit I do not like the idea of checking out loads of insurance companies! I've managed to avoid having to do it this far in my life, I don't fancy starting now

My only problem with the CThA and their insurance is that they will not allow me to use anything that has essential oils in it because my ITEC course has a blanket no e.o.s policy - including those lovely reflexology levender foot wipes, Tui balms etc, and I'm already sick of Boots Disinfectant wipes! I have no desire to pretend to be an Aromatherapist without the relevant qualifications.

I also genuinely wondered if there were any specific advantages, like the directories you get to join. Thanks for the info. Anyone else got any thoughts?

The following associations are all members of GCMT: (lead body): AAPA, AHBMT, APNT, CThA, FHT, ICNM, ISRM, LCSP, MTI, NAMMT, SMTO, STO. Your local authority will have a list of accepted organisations and you can choose from these. See what value you get from each! Sure google will come up with their websites. ICNM is very well recognised in London area. Good luck.
