NY Bar?

Ok, doing a search for NY Bar brings up every thread with the word "bar" in it , so I'll ask this question & hope you guys will go easy on me.

I seem to recall a thread a long time ago about guys going back & forth on the pros (pun not intended) & cons of the NY Bar. Some loved it, some hated it. I've been curious about this place, but haven't gone in during any of my 4 trips because, well....why, when you have the DR, KL, SL or MP's?

So, what are your impressions of this place? I recall someone posting that there may be a few gems to be had...what are the best dates/times in your opinion to find one?

Sometimes some gems come in although not many lately.

Sometimes the shy first timer will go to the NYB instead of the Del Rey as the DR can be intimidating for the first timer or part- timer for that matter.

The service is good and they don't pad the bill.

More girls show up when there is a band playing . I think this friday and saturday there will be bands.

The place is a dump though and I don't like the food although some others do. The fries there always taste like they were cooked in month old oil. My buddy ordered a burger the other day and it was bloody raw on the inside, he sent it back and it came back bloody raw in the middle and burnt on the outside. Go figure , pretty hard to screw up a burger .

The drink prices are high, almost as high as the del rey. In other places (shannon, patio, etc...) prices are 200-300 colones cheaper.

The only time I've ever set foot in there was Saturday night over Labor Day weekend. Came in with Chi-Trekker and his then-novia to catch a bit of Bilko's act.

Stayed about ten minutes. At the time we left, there were about 30 guys and the only females present other than Chi's novia were the bartenders.

The NY Bar is a place I hang out. I don't see it as a 'dump' as Zman does. I enjoy the burgers and don't find the fries horribly greasy, but perhaps he was just unlucky, or I have just been lucky, or our tastes and standards differ radically. But enough about the food.

The NY Bar is NOT a mini-Del Rey. It's not wall to wall hookers. There are usually a handful of regulars on any given night, though they don't always stay there more than a few hours. There are also some girls that hang out there until the Key Largo opens, for example. But if you want the Del Rey, go to the Del Rey.

I have hooked up with quite a few very good performers who were at least 'acceptable' physically. The $100+ Colombianas don't hang out there. Most of the girls there will accept $40 and some $30 or less.

The place is only a half a block from the Del Rey, and it's a quiet (except when a band is playing) place where you can relax, have a beverage and find other English speakers. If you see a girl there you like you can offer to buy her a drink and do an attitude check. She won't expect you to pay for wasting her time, as some have done at the Key Largo or Del Rey. But if you are on a mission to get laid ASAP, there are better options. If you want eye candy, there are better options.

Thanks for the info, Bilko...I was looking for a quieter version of the DR, for sure, because sometimes it's just a little much. I'm not a big fan of the $100 Columbianas & occasionally prefer someone a little older for variety's sake. I'm not hung up on finding "perfection", whatever that is.

NY Bar is a good place to hang out and have a few drinks and escape the insanity of the DR/KL for a while. It is a good place to grab a bite and bullshit with some of the other gringos, but the few working girls that you'll find in there are usually nothing to write home about.

i like the sidewalk overlook part of the bar. you can often see some of the little darlings coming up the sidewalk on their way to the Del Rey or see some of the mongers on their way back to the Presidente with their company.

i use it as a quieter place to get away from the Del Rey.

i might start ff at the Del Rey for happy hour, move on down half a block to the NY Bar for awhile, then return to the Del Rey or SL or ZB or a low rent stroll over to Calle 6.

there are a few gems to be found there, but many of the little darlings there are barred from the Del Rey.

the mid-day opening crowd is a great opportunity to chat with some of the old timer resident gringos, most not CRT members, and pick up good advice and interesting stories about CR.

all in all, i think the NY Bar is worth a visit during the evening as well as the early afternoon/mid day hours.

I was there once for lunch. The place was empty. The burger was okay. I will try it again later towards the evening.

Have been in there a few times. I have found it to be alternatively depressing or exhilarating, depending on the time and the patrons.

I think the burgers there are the best I've had in CR. Mine were perfectly cooked and the fries were very good.

I also found quite the cutie to session with one night, although most of the girls I've seen there make me look downright svelte.

I agree, the NY Bar is hit or miss when it comes to having a good time. In 2003 when my beloved Cubs were on the verge of winning the pennant : , I spent every night in there and each night the same group of fun, raucous baseball fans were in there watching the game alongside me, and then afterward we’d all run over to the DR together and pick out our respective pieces of ass for the night. I’ve definitely been able to have some good times and make some good friends at the NY Bar over the years, but it can also be a ghost town at times as well. YMMV.

i am curious, were you there right at the opening bell or soon thereafter?

by mid afternoon, the initial opening crowd has drifted away.

admittedly, i have not visited the NY Bar in awhile, but I remember often running into the old timer crowd there in the first few hours it opened each day.

now, hearing stories from old timers in CR may not be everyones idea what to do in CR, but the NY Bar is a great place to hear them.

when you visit again, you may wish to be there at the opening bell, I think it is around noon or 1 pm.

Opening bell?? :? Not sure I am familiar with that. I believe the New York Bar opens at 12 noon [with no bell]. What you may be referring to, is at 6:30 p.m., they do indeed ring the bell. This signals that everyone sitting at the bar gets a free drink of whatever they happened to be drinking when the bell rang. It is usually the busiest time of the day.

The New York Bar is not for everyone.....they do tend to get an older crowd. It's definitely not the Del Rey, but then, that is why I go there. Personally, I like the place and the food. I also enjoy talking to some of the old timers that congregate there every afternoon.....usually the same people, sitting in the same stools. I've heard a lot of good stories. I have spent many afternoons sitting on the balcony overlooking the sidewalk. From that perch, I've seen many interesting things......it's better than watching television.

As mentioned before, occasionally you can find a gem of a chica at the New York Bar.....I often have.
