LCICI Indian Head Massage Diploma

I wondered if anyone had any comments on the validity of the LCICI Indian Head Massage training course and diploma - website is: http://www.indianchampissage.com/trainingcourses.htm

I'm currently part way through my Reflexology training course, and planning ahead a little. I'll be doing an ITEC Diploma in Holistic Massage next yr anyway (May onwards) but wanted to squeeze in training in Indian Head Massage too, if possible, that will enable me to get insured and practice it.

ITEC courses in IHM I can't do until after I have completed the training in holistic massage. I can do 1 day 'practitioner' courses to top up my CPD... but it doesnt seem enough to me.

This course seems very thorough - it requires submitting case studies before being able to go on to do any exam, and it scores 21 CPD points for the CMA. Is it up there with the equivalent ITEC qualification?

On the negative side, they normally have 18 students in a class, which seems excessive, and I have no idea if LCICI is as recognised as something like ITEC.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, and especially if you have done this course yourself.

I haven't done the LCIC course but I know people that have and it is a good system. Have a ITEC qual and have taught it as well several years later. I'm sure that LCIC is a good thing to do, more practitioner orientated than ITEC, very insurable and is recognised by the massage industry, and very importantly better than a one-day course. I believe part of the LCIC criteria is the study of Mehta's IHM book which to me at first looked like a coffee table book, but is a good textbook with a wealth of knowledge.

As for CMA 21 credits that's just for CMA members. Other professional associations will give X amount of CPD credits for the hours spent studying. This can be calculated by studying a PA's CPD handbook. Don't be fooled by any organisation quoting CPD credits (it's a form of clever marketing - reading a book or attending a MBS show will give you X amount of CPD credits), the important thing is that it must be a good course and insurable.

Thanks Reiki Pixie, I was hoping you would reply as I did some further browsing of the forum and saw that you have taught ITEC IHM. The most important thing for me is the course: that I will learn as much as possible from it, and I will be the best practitioner I can be because of it. Of course, practical elements like insurability have to be considered too, hence my question. Thanks for putting my mind at rest. It does like like a very good course, and I am reassured. I'm quite excited now!

I think I have been a bit confused about the CPD but I think I get it now - I will be AoR registered with reflexology next yr and will need to do relevant CPDs for them, plus I will need to do massage related CPDs after I have done my ITEC in Holistic Massage. I'll cross those bridges when I come to it!

In terms of IHM, are there any bodies or groups to join once qualified, to meet other practitoners and share knowledge etc?

Hi Mike

Most IHM therapists often practice other therapies, so it's best to seek multi-therapist out. Organisations like CThA www.complementary.assoc.org.uk & FHT www.fht.org.uk who cover most forms of therapeutic technique have local groups to discuss therapy stuff.

As for the AoR, you could claim CPD credits with IHM by stating that you are exploring head as a form of reflexology since there as reflex points relating other parts of the body, where hand and foot reflex wouldn't be suitable. Are you getting my point?

Talking about the AoR, unless you intend to be very reflex focused, I can't see the point of joining such a single therapy organisation (unless you have an extra £71 to burn). Wouldn't you be better off joining either CThA or FHT? They still look after your professional interests, and broader CPD credit accumulation.

Hi again, I'm already a student member now with the AoR, and that will transfer automatically to full membership once I finish the training. But other than that, you've given me lots to think about re which professional bodies to join long-term etc. Thanks for the info!

Hi Mike

The man who runs that centre is the person who introduced indian head massage to the west and started it as a therapy. Personally i plan on going there after i have finished the course i am on at the moment.
It is very recognised and in my mind i'd do that before an ITEC or VTCT in this therapy.

Thanks Chloe. I have done a lot of research about the centre and Narendra Mehta, who runs it. He has even been awarded an MBE for his services, so I guess validation doesn't come much higher than that! Good luck with your training too

I guess you know he produced a book, i brought that and the one on facial massage too, if you are interested they both came very cheap on amazon, but i brought the "buy used and new" option instead of the regular amazon price.

I think I have the face massage book somewhere, which I found in some charity shop a couple of yrs ago. I buy most of my books from Amazon on the 'buy used' option these days.

I actually would want to do the face massage course too, in addition to the head massage, at some point - I wonder if there is some way to do both?
