Indian Head Massage

Hi

I'm hoping that someone can help - I've just joined.

My mum had an indian head massage a couple of weeks ago at a health spa. She has never had any treatment like this before. She is 53, and very fit and healthy, although she leaves a very fast-pace kind of lifestyle, working 5 full days a week in a stressful job - she's always on the go.

Anyway, as soon as she had the treatment done, she started to feel sick. About 1/2 an hour later she started to be violently sick - she went to get help and continued to be sick. Eventually the staff called an ambulance and she ended up in hospital wired up to a drip 'cos she'd lost that much fluids. She spent the next 3 days in bed, feeling drained and nauseous.

I'd be really grateful if anyone could explain why this happened. She doesn't have any underlying medical problems.

Sounds like food poisoning to me, and just a coincidence that it happened after the IHM?

IHM can make people feel a little nauseous I believe due to releasing toxins during the massage, but I don't think it could possibly make anyone that ill, I don't see how it could be physically possible?

What do others think?

Anyway - how is your mum now?

I have never known anybody to be ill after an Indian Head Massage. I would suggest that she was going to be ill anyway.

I heard of a student that was in college and that was having a IHM done by another student, after the session she got up and passed out then when she came round she was bieng sick and carried on being sick and feeling poorly for about 3 days, she felt so ill she had to have time off work! According to the tutor it was becuase too much pressure had been applied. Hope this helps

My Mum is fine now, as I say, it took about 3 days to get over it.

Could there be a possibility that if the oils weren't mixed correctly, this could have caused it?

I also wonder if it may have been coincidence, BUT

The symptoms mentioned can be caused by inner ear balance disruption, similar in a way to sea sickness. So perhaps an alteration in blood pressure, or pressing a particular acupressure point might trigger a response like this in some people.

They are also the symptoms people with meniere's syndrome get when they have a severe attack. It would be interesting to know if these ladies had a history of migraine attacks.

I have to treat my mother, who has menieres, very lightly and carefully to avoid dizziness, my daughter also felt very peculiar after her first treatment by a heavy handed therapist, But has been ok with light treatment by me. This also happened on my course with a fellow student, who was fine with light treatment.

I think it shows that practical training is essential and students need to be taught that the pressure should be comfortable (especially on the neck) for the client and to keep checking.

Mostly though, clients are very happy and thoroughly enjoy the good effects of the treatment. I was delighted that a client with diabetes who has a constant headache told me today that she hadn't had one for a week!! I treated her with a combination of IHM, acupressure and reflex, they work really well together.

Thanks for the info. I myself have tried an indian head massage and really enjoyed it/found it very relaxing. It was just a huge worry, as you can imagine, for her to be so ill!

i have heard comments from a few people that have not entirely enjoyed IHM, due to too much pressure being used, perhaps and therefore too vigorous. (not administered by me, i hasten to add!).

i dont have a formal qualification in IHM but i learnt head massage in my massage cousre and have since been on IHM workshops and have the ITEC notes from a teacher. IF i do it, i say its not IHM as such and i tend to be far more relaxing than stimulating... afterall, thats what most people want.

Hi glad to hear your mum is feeling better , it must have been scary for her.

as has been said the IHm may have made her sick but it might have been the whole combination of the spa experience. was your mum using the sauna, solarium, steam room etc before her treatment, did she have the lovely 3 course lunch. i only ask because the first time i went to a spa i was violently sick on the way home , not as sick as your mum but i did spend the night throwing up. i am certin that all that steaming etc along with massage meant i detoxed much too quickly and lthough i was drinking water throughout the day i was sipping from a bottle and probably wsn't drinking enough. It sure spoiled my lovely day and was a pretty expensive way to be sick!
anyway just a thought tht it might have been the whole combination rather than just the IHM
