Was using Butterfly bar in Soi Seadragoon a lot last trip,you couldent even cross the smal street for going to the toilet,without having them afther you.
Even when you was seated in that bar they would still try to get attention from you

The guys on the street with lizards and cameras also scoot whenever the police approach. I think it's illegal to use those animals for photo purposes. Many years ago, I think there were people there with monkeys and cameras, but I haven't seen them in ages.

I can only see it getting worse and worse. Now we get McDonalds; KFC and Starbucks staff out in the road trying to guide you into their premises. How long before the Pharmacies and PhotoShops and Uncle Tom Cobbly and All are ALL doing it!

According to these responses, the bar is charging much more money because they put on a show, but now they're not putting on the show, but still charging the same prices that are higher because of this non-event? "Thai logic" isn't what I would expect people to be calling it, after all the previous discussions here.




From reading all the discussions up above, you'd think that there are more touts than ever. Bangla Road last night didn't seem different from a year ago at this time. A few touts asked if I wanted to go see a "show", but saying "no thanks" put an instant end to it. For every tout who asked anything, twice that many people wanted to sell me cigarettes, and five times as many (both girls and ladyboys) asked if I wanted a massage or company for the night.

After reading about how bad Sea Dragon is, I stopped in front of it a couple of times, and just looked inside. Nobody came over to try to sell me anything, not even once. Maybe I need to walk around inside in order to get bothered?

The "busiest" part of Bangla Road was where the cowboy-fellow was standing, putting on his magic show. This guy is so good, he could probably sell tickets for people to watch his act!

i remember from my last trip, tuk tuks were pretty easy to say no to... we ended up just using a motorbike taxi instead.. and hire'd a scooter as well...

haven't experienced saying no to gogo touts yet.. my last trip was with the missus.. so they usually left us alone... this time round ill be with a few mates.. so i think we'll be targeted left right and centre

we've been sitting up in what i call the spaceship bars up on soi seadragon and watch all the muslims/indians hit on the lb's
i saw them and the touts all scamper and a police man with a pointed cap strolled by
they all came right back out 5 minutes after he walked by

i also seen a few go-go's down seadragon holding signs saying that their beer was only 150baht or some price. i guess to combat the touts

i went to the Gibbon rehab. centre up nth phuket a few weeks back, a few of the monkeys there were rescued from Bangla rd . pity they cant do same about those poor lizards & ban them.

Thankfully so far this week I have not had any issues, but know they & the issues noted in this thread exist. I bet tonight I have an issue now that I have posted this. Not sure why have been luck so far, but I am usually taking video as I walk down Bangla and SD. A few have briefly approached me, but don't follow me as I walk past thankfully.

As someone whose been here longer than the last high season I can tell you the tout numbers have risen exponentially..

Secondly as a non drinker.. Who doesnt even wander into the street, your opinion or experience counts for very little.

Most regular board members will be up on the scam because, well they read the forum. It the newbie holiday makers who are getting robbed, I hate that but what what I hate more is that this money is going to these scum. After all, a cut will filter up to `mr big` which will allow him to buy more influence, more immunity, more capital to launch yet more protection rackets ect.

Will anything change? Maybe and outraged tourist will stand up for his perceived rights and get stabbed in the process, causing sufficient bad publicity to call a halt (probably only for a short while)?

Tackling this would be an ideal role for the volunteer tourist `police` - who also claim to be tourist advice workers depending on which paragraph of the post you read.

They could distribute leaflets, stand near the touts and warn tourists who look like they are about to be duped, in other words give good tourist advice.

Will it happen?

thaicum doesn't go to bars. He prefers to buy 7-11 beers and hang out on Beach Road with transvestites (not LB's) and beach bums. (real Thais) h:

But, he did say that he took a card from a tout once...for a free drink. He went to the bar for a freebie, but didn't stay...as he only likes beer and objected to the noise, etc.
