I had a client at the weekend whose father had died the day before. She still wanted to come for a treatment which I found amazing. I treated her for a bit longer than usual. Anyway afterwards I more or less cried all day. Just sobbing. I've not had that before and I wasn't in a particulary bad way before the treatment or anything. I just wondered whether I had taken on her emotion? Any thoughts on that? Thanks

Hi Bexx, When i started learning reiki i was told it is possible for this type of thing to happen so i dont see why it wouldn't happen for indian head massage. I have heard of things like this happening and in a reiki share a friend picked up on some of my own emotions.

I would make sure you ground and protect yourself during treatment and adopt a little routine to cleans yourself afterwards like shaking your hands or washing them to get rid of excess energies that you may be picking up. With something so personal and emotional as the loss of a close family member its no wonder you picked up some of that raw energy.

our teacher also said (if possible /appropriate) put a piece of hematite or some such grounding stone on the floor, under the clients chair or between their feet - she said if she thinks the client will not be open to that she just keeps a piece of hematite in her pocket

i also agree about shaking your hands (or even washing them) with the conscious intention of getting rid of that person's energy
our teacher also talked about letting the healing energy pass through you - which is also about consciously grounding and protecting yourself

(P.S. i also know that the initial shock of bereavement can be so intense (and strange) that if often helps to carry on 'as normal' at first - so it doesn't surprise me that she didn't cancel, and she may have also known that it would do her some good!!)

Hi Bexx,
I am at college on at holistic therapy course. I was conducting IHM with a case study, on completion the client was very emotional, I felt it, and had to control myself in front of client, as soon as she had left the salon I had to shake of her negative energy.

It dawned on me after that I had not protected myself and took on her sadness, the experience taught me two things. 1. Before any therapy work protect yourself and your energy before working on any client. 2. If you don’t protect yourself, you as a therapist will be drained of your energy, emotion, and your body will fail you.

Never under estimate, the bonds or energy that will be exchanged whilst giving healing. – Maybe you needed that experience to learn from – I know I did.

On the plus side, you will have empathy for that person, and that can only make you a better healer.

Hi thanks for the replies. You are all right I definitely don't protect myself properly. To be honest I wonder if I really know how to. I mean I know the principle of it all but I don't think - well I know I don't - ever do it properly. The draining bit is a bit of an issue really come to think of it - I had a busy week with clients last week and at the end of it all I just wanted to flake out. I do now keep a crystal in my pocket - amethyst - but I don't think it's enough. I seem to be going through a batch of clients who are all extremely depressed and stressed etc etc and it is a bit tough to be honest. Protection is the aim this week!!

I think it is good to experience these effects, as not everyone is able or aware.

As with most holistic treatments, the level of belief into the effects of them are down to the individual.

I believe that feelings, emotions and negativity can pass from one client to another, which is why i shake of my hands on completion and try to keep my mind clear whilst massaging.

I have also experienced on many occasions how headaches pass from clients to therapist and vice versa.

Trying to keep personal feelings and problems out of the salon, as your client will probably pick up on them in more ways than one

It can go the other way too, therapist to client.

When I wasat school, I swapped with a girlin the afternoon, I worked on her first and felt fine. She worked on me and then we finished for the day. I didn't feel odd, but by the time I got outside, I vomitted, then I felt fine again. I found out later she had had an organ transplant and was on heavy dutyrejection drugs, I think they just distorted her energy field so much it made me throw up. I'm pretty sure I had "protected" myself while working on her, but I'd never thought to protect myself while she worked on me. It was a very educational experience. I also found out later that other people had also not felt well after she worked on them (though no-one else had vomitted)
