Sports massage course

Hi,
This site seems to be biting the dust. I would very much like to make contact with others who are in or just about to start doing a sports massage course.
I am currently doing the VTCT diploma in Body massage and will start sports course in September. It would be great to be able to contact others doing the same.

I'm doing the remedial massage course with the VTCT at the moment, I understand that certain elements of the course are similar.

There's a lot of detail to the course and quite a steep learning curve, so you'll need to make a big committment to practising outside of class, moreso than the other VTCT courses I've done.

There's a book called Sports and Remedial Massage (something like that) which is written by Mel Cash and we've used that as the basic book to read. It's quite thorough and explains all the basics. You might like to have a peek at that, most of the college libraries will stock it.

Have to agree Mel Cash is good! cant help with the sports therapy, I decided against it as I thought the pain inflicted was to much and I manage to get the same result with deep tissue, NMT and Soft tissue release.....a lot less brutal but just as effective in my honest opinion....

Hi Justine and TigerBee,
I had thought of the remedial or another course that would give me more technique but the sports massage is only one in this area.
I was a bit staggered by the case study requirement because doing the 20 massages for my present course, in addition to trying to do other people, was quite onerous at times. I really didn't want to totally rule out other people and they may have become clients. As some did and will stick with me when I qualify.
I am getting the Mel Cash book, a friend has already loaned me a copy.
All told I am quite looking forward to it, although I feel I want to learn more techniques now.

We've only had to do nine treatments, plus in class assessments.. done a fair bit more than that cause I feel nine is a little low... specially to use all the techniques.

I agree with T but there are A LOT of techniques to learn, the ones Tigerbee mentioned are in there too, I think it's a case of pick and choose what you find works for you and your clients, which only comes with perseverence, confidence and practice.. I'm more for the gentle approach over some of the lads but there you go, what do you expect from a girlie?

It really does seem a bit hit and miss with VTCT courses. My experience of the Sports massage course is poor. It is quite basic and I am itching to learn more. I think 20 hours isn't enough case studies to become competant. Our tutor hasn't really encouraged us to do them and is yet to ask us whether we have started them (finish the course in June!).

Apart from all that I'm really enjoying sports massage and agree the Mel Cash book is very good.

I think I've probably said this before - but I opted not to do the VTCT course based on earlier posts and my tutors recommendation. I start my course at the end of August.

I'm currently reading the Sports Massage book by Mel Cash and Yuri? It's quite good. I've also had a look at a remedial massage book by Eddie ? (involved with Northern Institute of Massage - I'm hopeless at remembering names!!) that was a lighter read - but quite good as well.
