There are some great animal massage home study courses that are approved by NCBTMB.  One is http://www.equinemassageschool.com, which offers a home study course good for 25 ceus.  Another one is http://www.PetMassage.com, also offers home study for 25 ceus.  I am going to do these myself this year, but I may find I like working on animals more than people...lol.  The classes are also offered in work shops where the school is located.

I think animal massage is wonderful work!Just something to be aware of...the AVMA has been systematically removing the right for massage therapists to massage/work on animals unless they are a veterinarian or under their supervision.  If this is something you really feel is your calling it would be worth checking your state to find out if legislation has already passed or is in the legislature that limits your rights to work on animals.

Both of our dogs receive massage from me on a regular basis.  I have looked into the Equissage Materials and think they are really well put together, but my attention and resources are being focused on National Certification Exam at the present time.My Business Plan in college was Human and Animal (specifically Canine Massage) as a service together.  Our C.ocker Cross and our other dog ("THE" MiniDoxie) both love the attention, therapeutic nature of massage and caring they receive through massage. Wow Intuitouch...that's something I need to check into too as I do wish to one day incorporate animal and human massage in practice in one way or another. Hmmmmm.........this is a neat thread!!!!!!

I have talked with a vet in my town and he is interested in referring some of his canine patients to me when I take the classes.  He says that here in NC, you can only work with vet approval which does not seem to be a problem with the vets I have spoken with.  He is also going to put me in touch with the vet that works with rescued horses in another town.  The farm manager is very excited about having a volunteer, she has had massage therapists before and she says that the horses that have been abused and neglected really respond well to caring and gentle touch.  I would like to learn the canine massage so I can show people how to do it themselves.  I know alot of people with older dogs that are interested in learning how to do it themselves.  We have discussed having a clinic for the owners and their pets, to learn the techniques.  Also, another good way to get your name out there and get some interest is to offer a special such as donate a certain amount of money or dogfood to your local animal shelter and receive a discounted massage.  I have discussed this with my local shelter and they are excited about having a new way to collect donations.

:Hmmmmm.....2Trees, I wouldn't mind knowing just in case Equissage happens to be the one because I would not want to go through the training if it didn't quite seem up to par..... :-/I may go to the college's vet dept and ask if they know of any programs they could  recommend in my area.Thanks for your input on this tread.....its one that at least the 4 of us (so far) have an intrest in responding to.Sincerely,CaringHandsMss

Both websites look professional, but I'm guessing we're going to have to find a more willing source to get information on the schools. But what happens if the other therapists are as reluctant to give information?  :-/

I know someone who is a chiropractor and treats humans and animals.  She has a Vet referral form that must be filled out prior to the animals treatment.

This may be a consideration to look into for animal massage work, especialy since it has been mentioned here that a vet's ok is needed and in some places a vet's supervision.  Possibly this takes care of the problem?

I ordered the home study kit form http://www.PetMassage.com. it seems good and if you take and pass the test you get ceu's if you belong to ABMP. i havnt done the whole thing yet, but i read the booklet that they sent. It doesnt seem at all difficult (i massage my animals all the time-before getting the kit- and they always melt as i am working around their scapula's and neck). the anatomy of a dog/cat isnt much different than a person. When i finish i will let you know what i think.

I am part of a holistic influenced health site for animals. The original owner of that forum site was an animal massage therapist who learned from the school in I think either Ohio or Illinois...the one that the link http://www.petmassage.com belongs to. She said it was very good and she did get a lot of good information from them. She completed the course a little over a year ago. She actually went to the workshop and did not do the home study.It sounds like it is a good place based on her recommendation. I do wonder if doing the home study is as good as going there in person. You may be able to get more of a hands on training at the actual institute but at home you have more free time and it's less expensive. I too am thinking about getting into this myself. My vet refers her clients to other people but it is an option to add to my abilities.
