I posted (here and on TJ Amigos in the FAQ section) how to find Dr. Romero. His office is near the border and for $30.00 he'll write a Rx.

There are many pharmacies near McDonalds on the Mexican side of the border just after crossing into Mexico. Many can help you find a physican whose practice consists largely or writing a Rx for tourists.

Thanks for all the great advice guys. Looks like I need to make friends with a mexican doctor just to avoid being caught by an enterprising cop staking out a pharmacy.

come to think of it, if one goes to TJ during working hours couldnt one find a mexican md? maybe even the pharmacy could direct me to one. is that possible? I assume that a fairly small amount, $30?, $40? would pay for an Rx from a local doc. does that make sense?

It's easy to buy V/L/C in TJ. The pharmacy will sell it to you without an Rx. That's because Mexican law is the reverse of US law: you are requried to have a Rx to buy meds as opposed to the pharmacy needing an Rx to sell meds. (The reason for this law is many Mexicans are too poor to see a doctor so they consult a pharmacist for medical care. So the law was written in a manner that the poor are still able to get meds.)

If you don't have an Rx then buy a coke and take your V/C/L in the pharmacy. If a cop find you in possesion of V/C/L without an Rx then he caught you fair and square breaking the law and you can expect he'll want compensation to ingore yourl activity.

In TJ the cops have to you before a judge (who are on duty 24 hours a day) to get an order to take you to jail. (Unllike the US, arraingment is held before they lock you up.) The judge won't you send you to jail for having personal usage quantities, he'll only fine you. The maximum fine is $125.00--so don't over pay the cop if he gets greedy.

If it were me, I would probably buy them and pop em right away... actually I will probably try that next time ; )

On a similar note, for those who don't know, once you cross the broder from san diego, if you take the OTHER exit (not the one leading to all the cabs) it leads to a whole street full of pharmacists.

Yes and no.
Many pharmacies will sell to you OTC. I have only had one request a 'scrip.

Legally, you are required to have a 'scrip, either from a Mexican or a US doctor. If you get stopped by the local PD and you don't have a 'scrip, you may be in big trouble, or may merely lose your goodies.

I have heard that Customs has been cracking down on reentry... once again, if you have a 'scrip you're good to go, but of you don't, you could have a very serious problem.

HOW serious the problem can easily depend on your attitude, how hard you try to conceal the goodies (are you truly ignorant or intentionally evading the law?), and even who you are with. You are much more likely to get away without serious problems if you are traveling with your wife, who's appearance makes it apparent that you really do have a need for the stuff

Like the subject line sez, is it possible to buy these nice drugs over the counter at pharmacies in Tijuana? I mean in a regular walgreen's type pharmacy, not from street dealer. If these are available OTC from a reputable looking store can one expect them to be genuine?

I know many people go over the border to buy other medicines so I wondered about these.
