Remember, this happened in 2005 and gas cost a lot less back then. It was also when libres were just starting to not use their meters. I'd made the exact same trip several times before and the meter was always about 210 pesos.

The guy refused to turn on his meter, which is why I had to barter with him. He knew it was a $2.00 ride by the meter. He also knew I knew what the correct fare was and that he'd lose a fare by trying to jack up the price, which is why he agreed to accept $2.00.

The $2.00 each was a BS move he pulled at the border. My "friend" (like Fireballs) wets his pants at the mention of a cop. I'm still upset he ran back and give the guy an extra $2.00. What the cab driver did was just plain wrong--and IMHO people shouldn't be allowed to get away with things that are wrong. (Plus calling the cops was a bluff. He wasn't using his meter. That's illegal and there is no way he'd want to face the cops.)

Remember I have a place in TJ and know the cab prices. I expect to be treated like a local, not fleeced like a tourist. I very seldom have cabs try to scam me--execpt in the ZN and at the border where screwing American is considered "fair game."

I am more or less with Fireballs on this. As I don't think a guy can even pay for the gas with the $2, but I would rather him turn on the meter and let me give him a tip...of course not everyone will tip, but I really want to tip because it was my idea....I have to hear...$x plus tip....just something I don't like.

Most of my adventures with the taxis start in Zona Norte...as I am not catching them at the border. When a guy is trying to take advanaeforum.xxxe of me, I just tell him I would rather walk.

EX...I was going from Zona Norte last week, and the Libre told me $10...I told him that was too much and I would walk....the next guy turned on the meter and it was 21 pesos when we got there...I gave him $5 and he was greatful.

Now often when I deem the guy an asshole, I get out of the taxi and don't close the door. I've had my share of run ins with these guys, and I just take care of it in my own way.

Sorry to hear about ElDangeroso's friend, though it is a bit difficult to believe considering the location right in front of Adelitas. Imp point is that we have to be on alert all the time. Sometimes we take the zona safety for granted, and for most time it is

Fireballs, interesting reading as usual, Thanks. About Burts run in with the Taxi driver, I also need to be like a Burt. Every time I give 5$ to the cab driver for ride from border to the zona and they are not happy, last time one guy had the nerve to demand 6$ ! Heck I just gave him a cold look and thrust 5$ and walked away, didnt want to spoil my trip from the start, but I hate when these f+++kers take you for a ride !

Well lets say something good about the 'ugly Americans' and really I'm only talking about tourist visiting other countries like Mexico, and that they act like ambassadors of America, and should remember that, when they are screaming about being cheated over a dollar on the bus, like the example I gave of that couple staying at the very expensive Hilton, when in reality they were not being cheated at all.

I took a cruise a few months ago, and spent two days in Miami, South Beach. One of the first things you notice is lot for European tourist, and they don't tip, as that's their custom in Europe, so what the businesses do is just automatically add a 15% service charge to every bill to make up for the difference. As Americans are the best tippers in the world, even in TJ a tips isn't always expected, as most Mexicans don't tip the cab drives. What was also surprising to me is all the European and American chicks that go topless on the beaches in South Beach!

Bohemian there is no "alleged" run ins with taxi driver from Burt. These are facts. You know some of Burt's techniques I might use myself for dealing with unruly taxi drivers. For example, lets say taxi libre doesn't turn on his meter or tells you how much, and when you get to the zona, he says $5 dollars. What Burt recommends is casually getting out of the cab first, as this is very important, and then reaching in with one arm and giving the taxi driver $1.50 dollars, and telling him that's what I gave the driver last time, and walking away while the taxi driver stews in his own juice, as there is little he can do at that point.

Now I do get a little pissed when the taxi driver doesn't want to put on the meter, and tells me $5 dollars. But I could at least respect that he told me the price first, as I could negotiate the price down to $ 3 or $4 dollars, or find another taxi driver willing to put on the meter, getting rare these days at the border. Now it is the law that the taxi driver is suppose to put on the meter, and charge you according to what the meter says. But many people will disagree with me here, but I also feel there is a 'moral law' that's more important. If the taxi driver does not want to turn on his meter and only charge me $2 dollars to take me to the zona, I"m not going to try to force him too, by telling him what the law is. The guy has been waiting in line for 1/2 an hour maybe longer waiting for a good paying customer, and here I come along with my $ 2 dollars ride to the zona. So I respect their wish to be paid $5 dollars, as long as they ask me first, and give me a chance to negotiate, or ask another taxi driver in the back on the line who won't care as much about only a $ 2 dollar fare. ( I don't see how these guys can make it on $2 dollars?)

Let's face it we have plently of misbehaving or "ugly" visitors (and yes even immigrants) in the US from all over the world. Why do you think LA is so fucked up? In LA some people constantly complain about the "ugly Immigrant" (and I definately do not mean this as any sort of racist attack against any group- just a politcal one) when legal and illegal immigrants and their children are screwing up the local and regional law enforcement, education, and healthcare budgets. And we cannot scapegoat African-Americans for this- they are less than 10% of the population in LA- which is a Latin city. So who is the problem? Ugly Americans?

I think Brits can be worse than American tourists- at least as far as being cheap and rude. Italians are generally louder and more boisterous. Japanese are famous for overpaying for everything and seem to always move in groups of no less than 10-that is annoying, too. I'd critique the travel habits of other countries but, let's face it, only rich countries have many tourists. Being a tourist is a luxury! Most people of the world cannot afford foreign leisure travel.

Rude, oafish American, Asian, and European tourists clog the skies, streets, freeways, and sidewalks of LA. Not intended as a diatribe, just trying to bring balance to the dialogue. Americans should just be themselves abroad- just like everyone else. The phrase should be the "ugly tourist" which is pretty much universal.

Yeah, the story of his friend getting choke hold and robbed right outside of AB on Saturday night(any night for that matter) is as believable as Bush and Chavez having dinner together. Plus, the police station is right around the corner. Maybe his friend is not telling the truth.

I kind of thought the same thing, if he was going from AB to get a cab he would be standing right in front of the doorway. Usually there are doormen, a cop or security and half a dozen cabbies. I find it hard to believe that someone could get strong armed and choked out there.

That is a very strange report as you know both Juantez and the doorman Mairo keep radios and the police respond quick...Juantez even has a paid auxillary police officer security guy walking with him outside....

On another site I read from a long time vet, that CC had better talent than AB on Saturday night. Guess just a difference in opinions.

Ripped off at Adelitas on a Saturday night on the busiest night of the week even at that late hour, in front of locals, cops who stand by the door, and mostly American sex tourist who frequent that bar.....and none of them did anything to stop it? Yeah, I would call that a brazen attack. I just wonder why those choke hold muggers just don't go inside the bar and apply the choke hold in the bar?

You know what since ElDangeroso didn't actually witness the attack of his street wise friend maybe that attack didn't actually occur right outside Adelitas, and maybe it really happened on Articulo 123 where all the other choke holds take place, maybe he was in the wrong side of town where those other kind of SGs hang out and it's dangerous, and just said the friend said happened at AB to cover up the fact where he really was at?

I don't hang out in Chicago that often anymore but I'd say most of the girls there are not fat, old, nor ugly, maybe a few are but not that many, but I guess opinions will vary.

Looks like ElDangeroso was staying in a hotel on the US side? He goes to AB at 5pm leaves and talks about an hour in customs when he comes back at 9PM. You know they have some real nice hotels in TJ that are pretty safe that way you won't have to go in long border lines.

Nice interesting story and fun reading. But what happened after Lupe jumped off doggie style as you were applying the porn star lumber to her? Did she just leave you hanging, or were you able to finish up in another less hurtful position?

I'm a bit surprised by the location where he was assulted, but at 2 A.M. TJ can be an especially tough town. I'm not sure what your buddy could have done differently to reduce the chance of this type of assult. Too bad he also had to give up his watch because he didn't have any dinero stashed on his person nor did he bum a ride to the border with another monger.
