Anyone use vibration machines?

In college we trained briefly with a large machine they called a 'G3', which gave some very powerful vibes.  I think spas sell the treatment as part of a cellulite programme, which I don't really buy anyway, but I guess it could give your hands a break, if the client liked that kind of feeling.  I found the sensation a bit much , and I wouldn't really use it with clients.  We also tried out the smaller handheld units you can buy at the drugstore.  Does anyone use these machines with clients?

nope, i don't.  although i always pick them up when i see them on display...or sit in the chairs at brookstone.  they give me a headache when i use them.

My Myopractic therapist has used vibration with me several times. The device is basically a tuned/adjusted car buffer. I love it really. She calls it buffing and breathing. I can see how it could be a bit much for more sensitive types though. I now have a buffer now to use on myself. This is my first post so hello everyone. I use the Thumper Mini Pro which is percussive rather than vibrational (better penetration into the soft tissue than vibrational machines).  I do find the Thumper to be one of the best on the market. I like to use it when I do chair massage as it saves my hands and helps soften the tissues a bit faster, especially when there are time constraint issues.I also use it on clients whose backs are hard as a rock.  I generally warm up the tissue for about 15 minutes, then use the thumper for about 7 minutes then return to working on the client.  Definitely saves my hands and wrists!

 Me too!   They had a cool one at the Sharper Image in the mall last year, and I went back to buy it a couple months later and they didn't have it any more.  I know they can get pricey, but it sounds like it would really save my hands and do a good job of warming up the tougher clients.

i have also used the mini-thumper. for someone who is not a fan of using massage tools, i thought it was relatively easy-to-use and quite effective. i read the instructions and was impressed with the percussive action vs. the oscillating action of other vibrational tools.

I think they are great, but beware those of you who have carple tunnel syndrome or something like it, they are very hard on the hands of those people. the vibration of them causes irritation in the hands and wrist. I have problems with my hands and when I use it on my husband's neck and back, my hands throb for at least an hour, and then I have problems with them going numb on and off for weeks. So just an insight on them for CTS people. BUt they feel great on me.Jenny

I have thought about using one as well as a way to give my hands a break.  I have hesitated as I had a therapist use one on me once(on my back) and it sent my nerve endings jumping...my back was itchy!!  I suppose maybe she was using one that vibrating, I'm thinking if it was more of a "thumping" it wouldn't have the same effect?

I love the regular size thumper.  It is really a great tool to have on hand.  But, I am not to fond of these types of tools when I go to get a massage.   When I want a massage, I want hands on.  But, that is just a personal preference.

some occillate, and feel like vibration. th thumper series are percussive, & imo, feel remarkably different.

Jill, sometimes the increased blood flow can cause the skin to itch.  My hubbie complains of this feeling whenever I use the thumper on his back.

I use a small hand held on some of my clients and they love it    and many ask for it on return visits. It is great for getting deep in the glute or upper back is another popular area

I use one for a few minutes with nearly every chair massage I give. Saves my hands a few minutes, and the clients love it.I have the Homedics version; available most anywhere for 30-50 bucks.

Reviving an old thread here.

I had a new client mention the thumper. She knows a retired MT who is like 69 years old, probably one of the first MT's in my area. Apparently she started massage about 25 years ago. She uses the thumper. I have never heard of any other MT in my area using one. They did not promote them in school at all. I want to contact this MT and ask her about the thumper. They can be pricy tho!! From what I have seen, around $200.

Also, here in Wisconsin, I am not sure if MT's can use machines?

Here is what it says exactly from their website:

A massage therapist or bodyworker is a person who engages in the science and healing art that uses manual actions to palpate and manipulate the soft tissue of the human body and includes determining whether massage therapy or bodywork is appropriate or contraindicated, or whether referral to another health care practitioner is appropriate.


Ya think that means machines such as the thumper are not allowed?

Don't know Christine, I do know that one of the chiros I used to have treat me put a vibrating massage device on my back and I told him to get it away from me Pronto. He went into this whole, "Oh, I forgot MTs don't like vibrating masssagers... they feel that people will use it instead of them."
I was like, "No, dude, I'm gonna toss my cookies if you don't get that off my back!" Turns out the area he was vibrating so happily was one where a nerve exits the spine, and innervates the stomach!
Why do I tell you this? I don't know whether we're allowed by state law as MTs to use a vibrating massage device, sorry. But I just wanted you to be are aware that you may be dealing w/ more than muscles here...
And just in case someone does toss their cookies... you might want to bring a change of clothing to your office... :

I have found that the jeanie rub machines are a lot less than the thumpers. New thumbers run about $300. Jeanie rubs dont seem to go over $150. There are basically two kinds, variable speed and one speed. I dont know if they still are making the jeanie rub, there are TONS of them used on ebay. I would go for a jeanie rub single speed just for the price, because there is no way I am going to spend $300 for a thumper brand I am not sure I will use.

another massager I found is the oster stim u lax. This number is a vineforum.xxxe item. Apparently used by barbers in the 40s 50s and 60s from what I understand. I remember a member of the yahoo group talking about using it in the past. Cheap too, easily had for about $20 or less on ebay including the shipping.

I hate the numbing effect they have on the hands too. They were available to us in the lab at school but we rarely used them. I asked one of my regular clinicals if she would mind if I used one on her and she liked it but said she prefers the hands on approach.
